Ijtihad

The responsibility to interpret God’s divine guidance and apply this guidance to society.

Lit. “leader”; used for anyone who leads prayer in a mosque, not considered “clergy” by Sunnis; also, the title of the rightful leader of the Muslim community, according to Shi’i Muslims.
