WELCOME

Welcome to the Course "Theology of Rest". We hope and pray you will have a wonderful experience studying with us and complete this course successfully!

This course is designed to help the learners find the rest they need to survive and thrive in life, work and ministry. It is about desire for God and intimacy with God, the ongoing validity and importance of the fourth command.

The course is divided into three segments. The first discusses how God is pleased when we rest. The second segment consists of five session pertaining to how we rest in a restless world. The third segment explains how to take this rest into our workplaces and homes.

We hope that you will enjoy this course and you will successfully complete it. This is a simplified course, but it has all the video lectures, and you also have the opportunity to check yourself and pass the final exam if you choose to. This course is self-paced and is not intended to be assisted by a teacher. But if you have any questions, you can ask our instructor using the discussion forum "ASK A QUESTION" below or writing at tvsstudent@gmail.com (in the subject of the letter, specify the course code SM020_001). Our teacher will be happy to answer all your questions. Also, you can choose to study this course at a deeper level along with the course facilitator.   How can I please God by resting? You might be surprised to learn that we were made to please God by resting. Many of the same elements that bring rest into our lives bring pleasure to God when we participate in them. The first session of The Theology of Rest course explains how to please God by reflecting His image.

- TOPIC 2. Rest, the Pleasure of His Trust
  
  Rest and trust are related words. Trust is the big idea behind any Bible texts. In this lecture Jim Anderson looks at the Old Testament story in which Israel is forced to trust God for their daily provision of food. Every seventh day was a day to evaluate whether greed had taken root in the past week. This lecture emphasizes that the Sabbath is about trust.

  Without rest God's creatures do not feel or function well. We are more useful and productive when rested. In this session Jim Anderson talks about rest as a gift of God to man and man's gift to God. Divine pleasure, not human need, is the greatest reason for observing the Sabbath principle.

  Throughout history many of God's most remarkable servants have suffered from a loss of perspective. Elijah and John the Baptist are the prime examples. In this lecture Jim Anderson looks at the finest Bible characters to learn some lessons about losing perspective and renewing it.

  Sabbath-rest is not only the pleasure of God; it is the pleasure of His people. God wants us to enjoy Him. When we find our pleasure in God, He is most pleased and glorified. In this lecture Jim Anderson talks about the importance of repentance which can transform pleasure into joy. Sabbath-rest is a time to set aside what is less than the best for what is best.

  It is not enough just to study numerous texts related to the Sabbath and capture the main themes of the Sabbath. In this lecture Jim Anderson explains how to begin a journey of practicing Sabbath-rest. He used to be a pastor who preached about rest without taking rest. What helped him to rediscover the mysterious practice of the Sabbath and renew perspective on his life and work?

  In this lecture Jim Anderson talks about Sabbath as a means of being released from the constant preoccupation with work. Burnout is the result of being a captive to your work. The Sabbath is a celebration of freedom from every form of bondage. God's people are now free to seve God who released us by His powerful arm and gave us a day of rest as a proof of his compassion and the end of captivity.

  Releasing concerns naturally leads to reviewing your life before Him. And as you begin to review your life, suppressed thoughts will surface. In this lecture Jim Anderson compares reviewing your life with peeling the layers of skin off an onion. Sabbath-rest is time set aside for intentionally pondering a verse or passage of Scripture with your life in mind. It is your appointment with God, the time you need if you are going to be serious about your relationship with God.

- TOPIC 9. Sabbath, a Time to Remember
  
  In the family album called the Bible God is seen as a Mighty Creator and a Merciful Redeemer. God gives us the album full of pictures and provides time to review it. In this lecture Jim Anderson talks about remembering the the works of God, taking time to pause to rest and recognize the goodness of God. The Sabbath is associated with the act remembering. The Sabbath was a celebration of God's mighty acts of creation and his merciful acts of redemption.

- TOPIC 10. Sabbath, a Time to Look Forward
  
  Sabbath-rest opens a window to the future. It has eschatological significance projecting our thoughts into the future. While our bodies rest from work, our minds review the hope of final rest from toil, when all consequences of the curse are removed from the believer. In this lecture Jim Anderson talks about eternal rest reflected through the Sabbath.Heaven is the intended place of rest suggested through the Sabbath and portrayed through the land.

  This lecture addresses the topic related to life and work. How can we be at rest while engaged in work and responsibilities of life? Jim Anderson recommends that we all live and work lighter by coming to Jesus and learning from Him. What should we do to take a load off as God intends?

- TOPIC 12. Commuting Between Two Poles
  
  Sabbath-rest works much the same as commuting to work and from work. In both situations the commuter is intentional about rest and work. Both require direction and movement, the main difference is that Sabbath-rest is more of a state of mind than a destination. In this lecture Jim Anderson explains how not to be stuck at either pole or are stalled somewhere between contemplation and activity.

- TOPIC 13. The Twenty-Third Psalm, a Recipe for Rest
  
  One of the great revelations of the heart of God given to us by Christ is that of Himself as our Shepherd. The twenty-third psalm is very familiar, but few lives reflect the tranquility portrayed in this landmark passage of Scripture. In this lecture Jim Anderson preaches a sermon about the Good Shepherd so that we could learn three ingredients in the recipe for rest and experience true rest for which we yearn.

  Forgiveness is rest. There is hardly a relationship on earth that doesn't at some point require forgiveness.In this lecture Jim Anderson reinforces what has been the truth of Scripture for thousand of years: forgiveness is essential for health. So how can we learn to forgive as in Christ God forgave us?

- TOPIC 15. From Rest to Revival
  
  God has ways of bringing repentance followed by revivals. In this lecture Jim Anderson looks at Isaiah's warning to rebellious Judah to help us discover that God is trustworthy and can provide a life of grace. Rest remains a key to revival, we need to repent of our rebellion and enter His rest.
